On August 13th, 2020, the historical church at the Wounded Knee Massacre site was completely destroyed due to suspected arson. There has never been structural fire department on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation since its inception.
As of today, a group of enrolled members of the Oglala Sioux Tribe created a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to make the first-ever structural volunteer fire department in the Wounded Knee District. This organization was founded by Mr. & Mrs. Plume, who reside in the Wounded Knee District in the community of Crazy Horse, the headquarters location for the Volunteer Fire Department. For decades, it was one of the most needed resources to combat structural fires and wildland fires in support of the Bureau of Indian Affairs' wildland fire management, which they refuse to acknowledge Alpha One as a local resource.
